Easter in Ukrainian is Великдень /Velykden’/. For many Ukrainians, it brings together religious traditions, family gatherings, and special food.
In this mini-lesson, you’ll discover the meaning behind common Easter traditions, learn useful Ukrainian phrases, and practise using them.
✏️ How to use this lesson: Read each explanation, study the examples, and then try the activity. Every exercise uses language introduced above it. You can always look back!
The Ukrainian word Великдень means Easter. It combines the ideas of “great” and “day.”
For Christians, Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. For many families, it is also an opportunity to gather around the table and continue traditions passed down through generations. Some Ukrainians celebrate religiously, others enjoy the cultural traditions, and some do not celebrate.
Start with these three words:
Now learn a simple sentence pattern:
Це… — This is… / It is…
💡 Ukrainian does not need a separate word for “is” in these sentences. Це свято literally follows the pattern “This — holiday.”
✏️ Practise: complete the sentences
Use each word once: традиція · Великдень · свято.1. This is a holiday. → Це __________.2. It is Easter. → Це __________.3. This is a tradition. → Це __________.
Check your answers: 1 — свято; 2 — Великдень; 3 — традиція.
One of the best-known Ukrainian Easter foods is паска: a festive bread, often rich and slightly sweet. Recipes and decorations vary from family to family.
Eggs are another important Easter symbol. Learn the difference between these two words:
● Писанка is an egg decorated with patterns, traditionally using wax and dyes.● Крашанка is an egg dyed a single colour. One traditional method uses onion skins.
A кошик is a basket. Families who attend an Easter blessing may prepare a basket with paska, eggs, and other festive foods.
💡 Remember: Великдень is the holiday. Паска is the bread.
Use the sentence pattern you already know:
Practice: Game 2

For a general Easter wish, you can use З Великоднем!
✏️ Practise: choose the matching response

Easter preparations can be part of the celebration itself: baking paska, dyeing eggs, or decorating pysanky together.
Some families prepare everything at home; others buy Easter bread or decorated eggs. Traditions differ, so these sentences describe possibilities rather than things everyone does.
